“The day begins as we wake, even before the sunlight touches the land. Sleepy eyes widen as excitement fill us,” begins this true tale of ranch life on Hawai‘i Island with the Keakealani ‘ohana on cattle branding day. Take a ride with generations of paniolo and get a rare glimpse of the cowboy tradition – Hawaiian style.
Roberta Ku‘ulei Keakealani comes from a paniolo family and has had the privilege of walking and riding her homelands of North Kona. She has served as a Hawaiian-language teacher and now a cultural educator.
Danton Naone is a Native Hawaiian artist and photographer. He is known for his detailed graphite pencil drawings that evoke Hawaiian culture, tradition, lifestyle, places, people, and soul. Danton finds monochromatic realism a challenging and rewarding medium to depict his Hawaiian upbringing, and his passion and admiration for the paniolo lifestyle.
